Beechdale Road London
Construction progress, almost finished the renovation and extension to this Victorian terrace house.

The floor level is dropped by several steps from the original house level. This will create a taller ceiling height with larger windows and doors, up to 3m height supplied by Perla @perlawindows. This allows a raised garden to come up to a new window seat, making the siting area feel part of the landscaping. Recycled bricks from the demolition will be mixed into other reclaimed bricks, over all a darker brick and mortar with the existing to contrast the original building fabric. A poured concrete coping compliments the dirty tones of the London stock brick.

The rear extension includes a new kitchen, dining, sitting space and utility. The loft is converted into a new bedroom with a rear dormer extension, while other changes to the layout include a large new ensuite to the master bedroom.

It is designed in similar form and materials to the rear extension, with a rendered pedestal and simple metal detailing surrounding the door and windows

The new design refurbishes the original building fabric, improves the second floor and mansard roof by adding new dormers. The internal layout throughout the house is modernised. A small side extension creates a new main entrance, while to the rear of the property a small, dilapidated kitchen and bathroom are replaced with a large single-storey extension. A disused garage is demolished with a new studio with garden store becoming part of a courtyard.

The stepping facades create external shelter for outdoor living at the rear and to the front, there is a sense of enclosure as you approach the entrance between the garage and house. Internally it gives dual aspect from all habitable rooms into the garden with lots of natural light.

The form of this new house reads in two halves with gable roofs running parallel north to south. This enables a lower roof line reducing building bulk across its width and creates an interesting juxtaposition as the forms slip apart. They are connected centrally by a small, glazed roof which sits above the central stair and hall, making a light filled space with views into the garden in both north and south directions. The single-storey forms on the north, west and the garage to the south help create interest with flat roofs planted in sedum or other similar roof plants adding further greening to the properties verdant setting; the lower lying elements also help reduce building scale.

The house is designed to allow retention of all trees on the site, many of which have tree protection orders. The house has an active frontage with interesting corners stepping in and out of the footprint in relation to garden and boundary. The stepping facades create external shelter for outdoor living at the rear and to the front, there is a sense of enclosure as you approach the entrance between the garage and house. Internally it gives dual aspect from all habitable rooms into the garden with lots of natural light.

The proposed design uses a limited palette of materials with clean and simple detailing. This is a contemporary take on local period buildings, the use of two different bricks to define sides of the house, and some metal cladding will have a modern presence, yet timeless in nature. Precise placement of windows in relation to the brick laying gives the house a classic appearance. Without fuss or architectural adornment, fenestrations are simple, proportions play more to a vertical fashion which are cut neatly into the brickwork. An exposed lintel detail made of acid etched concrete finishes the window apertures with a little highlight.

Planning approved for a new house in the incredible Val de Bagnes near the ski resort of Verbier. This four-bed house is set over 3 floors under a double gabled roof. An atrium, entrance, and stairs are located at the homes core which creates a dramatic reception space with long views of the mountain ranges in both south and north directions. On the top level, a bridge links the two sides of the house consisting of a guest wing (east) and the master wing (west). On the entrance level (middle floor), the L-shaped layout provides a large, sheltered terrace from prevailing winds, linking the east and west living areas together. The cantilevering terrace provides a car port to the ground level which accesses the lower floor reserved for ski / outdoor kit store, plant room, utility and a study come bedroom. Zinc roofing, vertical larch cladding, and exposed concrete are the key external materials used to reflect colours and tones of the surrounding mountains.

Local planning restrictions impose new construction will blend with local buildings in terms of scale, appearance, and construction methods. Given the brief, building scale was the primary challenge; early analysis identified a single building would be too large and inappropriate to its surroundings, therefore requiring a radical design approach. The design is based around two uncomplicated ‘barn-like’ forms; invisibly linked to create one dwelling, each wing orientates to a slightly different axis and height, thus the house optimises the dramatic views and light the mountain offers.
.
The void between the two structures frames the impressive landscape beyond, continuing the villages split vistas. This space becomes a green roof concealing a living room below and is planted as part of the surrounding alpine meadow, ensuring the house reads as two buildings when seen from afar.

The house, located on the edge of the village has spectacular open views to the south. Sliding brise soleil panels control direct sunlight in the dining and kitchen area, constructed in larch to match the house cladding, they add texture and shadows in the interiors throughout the day.
.
The position of the dining area with its 180-degree view, captures the morning rising light and evening setting light making it a focal point from all living areas. The building’s timber frame roof is revealed throughout, particularly in the circulation spaces where its high ceilings flood the house with light and draw the panoramic views in. Living spaces are organised between timber posts and beams, defining space, and adding to the feeling of a modern-day barn conversion.

Flats are located on the corner of the South Court as a transition between town houses. With a large slope across the site, the development has been designed to step down incrementally with each dwelling being defined and regulated in its uniformity, reducing repetition which so often results from terrace construction.
.
Styles Field is a contemporary residential development comprising of sixteen contemporary 2,3 & 4 bedroom houses and nine 2 & 3 bedroom apartments, underground parking and a public outdoor space. The design is contemporary in nature, with pared back detailing. It reflects the local historic architecture with the inclusion of regional materials and forms. This work was completed by Malcolm Keegan in his previous practice as a Project Director at Acanthus Architects LW.
